We got into the bag-making business quite by accident.
We started back in 1997 just making theatrical costumes. However, we hated seeing all the beautiful scraps of leftover fabric just get tossed in the trash. One day we gathered some up and made a couple dozen drawstring bags to sell alongside the costumes. They sold like hot cakes, and before long some small business owners were asking us for special orders on bags to package their items!
So we did our research and found out that almost all the fabric gift bags available in retail stores come from Asia and you can't order them wholesale without having to buy thousands of them. We also discovered that the materials used in those imported bags are often very flimsy and cheap-looking while the fabrics that we use for our bags are much higher quality. No wonder people were excited to find us!
We opened up The Drawstring Bag Shop online in 1998, offering our custom-made bags without a large minimal order requirement. We don't have a huge warehouse so we order the fabric whenever a custom order is placed. This allows us to offer our customers an extremely large selection of beautiful fabrics in the full range of available colors.
Once in a while we come across some gorgeous fabrics that are only available in limited quantity, such as Indian sari fabric or discontinued brocade patterns. We also end up with a lot of fabric remnants while doing our regular custom work. So we started carrying a great selection of ready-to-ship bags available for purchase individually.
In December 2013 we decided to move our online shop to Etsy, as we felt that our quality hand-made bags were a good match for their platform. With more than 200 sales in the first year, our bags have certainly been a hit with Etsy shoppers!
